Monument record MRM 171 - Medieval and post medieval land boundaries at East Anglia One Area 26

2017: The excavation encountered a small number of short ditches oriented north-south. These were broadly parallel to a small indentation in the northern edge of the Martlesham Creek floodplain, situated to the west of the ditches Within this lower lying indentation, a localised humic-rich alluvial deposit, 0.40m thick, was recorded and interpreted as the northern edge of floodplain deposits; a 2m x 2m test pit handexcavated into the alluvial layer did not recover any finds, and no charred plant remains were found in an environmental sample. The date range over which the alluvium was deposited is unknown. One of the short ditches contained three sherds of medieval pottery (11th-13th century AD). An approximately linear cluster of postholes, aligned southwest-northeast, did not contain any finds, but based on their distinct appearance and the mixed character of their fills, are probably post-medieval or modern in date. The sparse archaeological remains at Site 26 probably relate to land boundaries along the northern edge of the Martlesham Creek floodplain and on the periphery of a denser area of medieval occupation and activity centred on the site of Creeks Farm (WBG007/119; EA1 Site 27), c.200m to the east.
