Full Description

Archaeological investigation produced evidence for multi-phase, late prehistoric, Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon activity associated with agricultural, domestic and funerary activity. An extensive network of field systems and droveways on a broad coaxial alignment have developed organically in a manner sympathetic to landform and not during a single phase. This is noted in a pattern of lengthy occupation, of periodic re-establishment of field boundaries repeated throughout the late prehistoric and Roman period, when a large enclosure is established on site. Ample evidence of nearby occupation is additionally represented by clusters of refuse and storage pits though the focus of settlement seems to be immediately east and west of the excavation area. Following the apparent abandonment of the Roman enclosure the site saw continued domestic activity in the early medieval period, waste disposal is a potential indicator of significant Early Saxon settlement in close proximity to the site. Two large quarry pits were excavated within the central portion of the site during the late post-medieval period and abandoned during the 18th and 19th centuries (S1).
