Full Description
March 2017. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The earthworks and to a lesser extent cropmarks, of platforms, enclosures and a probable road of potential Roman date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S4). It seems most likely that these earthworks relate to the adjoining Roman site (BRD 007-008). The platforms and small sub-rectangular mounds potentially relate to building platforms and/or the remains of buildings themselves. Finds of Roman pottery and tile in this area (BRD 145) also indicate Roman settlement. Dense evidence of Roman settlement is also recorded to the north of the river within Hockwold in Norfolk (NHER 5587). It is possible that additional earthworks are present, but are either obscured or altered by the later drainage features within alongside the river. An area of earthworks within the southern part of the site (not mapped just defined by extent) may also relate to this Roman activity, but it was felt that they were more likely relate to the nearby quarry and line kilns (BRD 088).
