Full Description

February 2017. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The site of a possible Second World War structure is visible on aerial photographs to the east of Bury Road, Brandon (S1-S2). A further smaller structure may be present to the west, although it must be noted that a number of small agricultural structures/pens are located in the area also, making confident identification of any smaller military structures problematic.
The function of this possible military site is uncertain, although the proximity to a pair of pillboxes may have relevance. If there are military, it is feasible that they may be associated with operations of the auxiliary unit at Brandon. An underground headquarters ‘Operational Base’ for the auxiliary was built within Forestry Plantation in the area in 1940. The base was located within scrub on the edge of Ling Heath (S3) and near a piggery (S4).
This possible military site is located close to a possible area of pig farming and is also just to the north of Ling Heath, but the location and the nature of the visible structure does not convincingly match. However an Observation Post was also built on the edge of Lingheath along the Bury Road (S3) and it is feasible that these structures are related to that site, although again a less ‘obvious’ surface structure would be anticipated for this sort of monitoring site.
