Monument record STN 161 - Area of former quarrying, probably post medieval

The earthworks described below were previously recorded as part of SHER STN 010 (MSF10031).
An area of uneven ground, identified on the ground and visible as earthworks on aerial photographs (S1) and on imagery from a lidar survey flown in 2015 (S2), probably represents a former quarry, perhaps of post medieval date. It has been suggested as the possible site of post medieval flint mines (SHER STN 010, MSF10031), but its appearance, and the apparent lack of flint waste of chalk at the site, suggests that it was more likely to have been a gravel quarry. The earthworks appear to overlie a group of boundaries and cultivation or plantation ridges (SHER STN 162). The surviving earthworks relating to the quarry have been mapped by extent as visible on the lidar imagery (S2).
