Farmstead record MDS 211 - Farmstead: Tan Office Farm House (Unknown)

Tan Office Farm House (Unknown), Mendlesham. 19th century farmstead and 16th/17th century listed farmhouse. Loose courtyard 3-sided plan formed by working agricultural buildings. The farmhouse is set away from the yard. Only the farmhouse survives. Located within a hamlet (S1-6).

Both MDS 210 and MDS 211 have buildings called Tan Office Farmhouse however on the 1839 tithe map they are in different ownership and are clearly separate farmsteads with their own farmhouse (S5). There have been two different farmhouses on this site, the earlier dates from the late 16th century and was converted into a unit house associated with the later farmhouse which is 17th century.

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
