Full Description

Pakefield Hall is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed Os map. The farmstead is laid out in a regular full-plan with additional U-plan elements. The farmhouse is detached and set away from the yard. The farmstead sits alongside a public road in an isolated location. This farmstead survives intact.

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.

At Pakefield Hall, 2 3/4 miles south south west from Lowestoft is a large portion of an oblong moat. (5)

Condition of moat is good. Shape and size as shown, average depth 4 ft.

Only the eastern, northern and part of the western arm remain of this homestead moat, which is situated on level ground circa 15.0m above OD. The arms attain a maximum depth of 1.2m with a maximum width of 6.0m and have been much infilled. An inlet is visible at the northwest corner but no outlet could be traced. The present 19th century house and farmbuildings are situated on
the island which is level with surrounding area. The owner has found flint foundations beneath his farmhouse and suggests a brick and flint wall to the east to be the remains of an older house, but this could not be confirmed. (S6)
