Full Description

This road seems to have originated with the 3rd edition OS Roman Britain Map, which Margary gives as his main authority. But how it got onto that map is uncertain, and no OS records which would have supported it can be traced. Nor, though Margary suggests that discovery was from air photographs, do any available RAF photographs show very much, and certainly nothing unequivocal. North of New Buckenham and up to Highoak hedgerow lines do provide some evidence, and if, as Margary states, an agger is also recognisable and the course can be plainly followed on air photographs, then that stretch is adequately established. But south of New Buckenham the existence of the road and the course it may have taken are both guesswork - except for two pipeline cuttings which may have crossed the road in the 1950's, which it would be prudent to regard as inconclusive on both counts. [See OS Linear Archive for bibiography to 1973 and field investigation reports from 1977].

Pipe-line trenching cut through a section of Roman road, on the line of Marsh Lane (S2-5).
