Monument record EXG 157 - Probable post medieval ditches. Breach Farm Solar, Exning

The evaluation demonstrated very low levels of evidence for previous activity across the entire 70 hectare site as only a limited number of archaeological features encountered. These features primarily comprised ditches, presumably cut for land drainage and boundary marking, and occasional pits. The majority of the features are likely to be post-medieval in date and some of the ditches clearly correspond with boundaries marked on 19th and 20th century maps or were on comparable alignments. A single sherd of medieval pottery was recovered from one ditch but this alone cannot provide a secure date. A small number of narrow ditches recorded in an area of slightly higher ground in the northern corner of the site could, based on their alignments and moderate dimensions, potentially be components of a prehistoric or Roman field system that continued to the northwest. Occasional peat deposits related to a former watercourse visible on aerial photographs were also present across the site. A number of pits were recorded. One large example is possibly related to chalk extraction whilst the others are probably associated with the planting, or grubbing out, of trees (S1).
