Full Description

Schooner registered at Brixham carrying a cargo of coal. (2)

`Seen to go aground in a strong SSW wind. The lifeboat was immediately launched, also a yawl from Pakefield, which got to the casualty first. The crew of six were taken off by the yawl which then started to fill with water and, but for the timely arrival of the lifeboat, would have been swamped. The lifeboat crew were awarded £5 by the Suffolk Humane Society, whilst the Suffolk Shipwreck Society voted £7 to the crew of the yawl.' (2)

`Lowestoffe, 21st July. The SALEM, Bowring, ran upon the Newcombe Sand this morning, and filled with water.' (3)

`Yarmouth, July 22. The SALEM, Browning, from Sunderland for Brixham, got on the Ridge Sand yesterday, and will become a wreck. Crew saved by the Pakefield boat, and landed at Lowestoffe.' (4)

NB: Source (2) spells the name of the vessel as SARAH, (3) and (4) as SALEM.
