Summary

1790 incident in which an English brigantine was beached near Lowestoft, after grounding on the "Inward Knowle", on her passage from Newcastle-upon-Tyne to London with coal, ashes and other general cargo. This wooden sailing vessel was shortly afterwards recovered and repaired at Great Yarmouth. Status: Casualty

Full Description

`Yarmouth, May 13: On Saturday last a brigantine, called the BRITANNIA, of and from Newcastle, John Petrie master, laden with coals, cinders, and sundry goods, bound therewith to London, came ashore at Lowestoff in Suffolk. `Tis feared the vessel will be wrecked, but `tis likely, the cargo will be saved.' (1)

`Newcastle, May 15, 1790...Saturday morning, at half past one o'clock, the BRITANNIA, Petrie, from this port to London, with goods, struck upon the Inward Knowle, in Lowestoft South Roads; by striking upon the sand, and a high wind then prevailing, the vessel unfortunately sprung a leak, which obliged the captain, upon finding her afloat, to run her upon the beach, but it is hoped that the ship adn cargo will be saved.' `Newcastle, May 29, 1790...The BRITANNIA, Capt. Petrie, on Saturday last was got off, and went into Yarmouth Haven to be repaired.' (3)
