1826 wreck of British cargo vessel which foundered after grounding on the Whiting Sand. En route from Shields to London with coal, she was a wooden sailing vessel.
Status: Casualty

`Harwich 6th Feb. The HELENA, Garritt, from Shields, and the OPHELIA...both for London, struck on the Whiting Sand last night and sunk; crews saved.' (2)

`Harwich, Feb. 6. The HELENA...and the OPHELIA...both coal laden, struck the Whiting Sand last night, and afterwards sunk in deep water. Crews saved by the smack ARTHUR SIBELLA, Thompson, and landed here.' (3)
