1833 wreck of British cargo vessel which stranded on the Whiting Sand en route from Newcastle-upon-Tyne to London, thought to have been with coal; a wooden sailing vessel.
Status: Casualty

`Aldbro' 18th October: The GALATEA, Thornton, from Newcastle to London, was totally wrecked on the Whiting Sand last night. Crew and most of the materials saved.' (2)(4)

17-OCT-1833: GALATEA, Newcastle to London, lost on Whitby [sic] Sands. (3)

NB: Source (1) states the cargo as coal, a detail not made explicit in the original sources (2)(3) and (4). Coal was certainly the chief export from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, but not the only possible cargo, particularly at this period.
