Monument record GFD 095 - Roman ditches, Medieval Rubbish pit and Post Medieval extraction pits on Land North of Newfield House, Bells Lane, Glemsford

The evaluation identified two ditches in a trench at the eastern end of the site that yielded two sherds of Roman pottery, suggesting that they may form part of a Roman field system that may be associated with the more intensive Roman activity previously identified north of Lion Road, c. 500m west of the site. An undated boundary and a parallel ditch may form part of the same ditch system. Limited evidence for medieval activity consisted of an isolated pit in a trench at the western end of the site that yielded four sherds of mid-12th to 13th-century pottery, small pieces of fired clay, fragments of animal bone and indeterminate charred cereal grain. The original purpose of this isolated pit is uncertain, although the relatively large amount of charred cereal grain recovered from the sample taken from this feature, in addition to the pottery sherds and animal bone fragments, suggests it had a secondary use as a refuse pit to dispose of domestic waste. In the same trench as the medieval pit were two large clay extraction pits of late medieval/early post-medieval date, both of which cut the subsoil. Finds recovered from these pits consisted of three sherds of 15th-16th-century pottery, fragments of flat roofing tile and two iron nails. Other features included a possible pond that probably silted up prior to the medieval period, an undated posthole and a modern service trench (S1).
