Full Description

Bronze socketed axe with loop. Good condition. Decorated with 3 parallel ribs separating into angular tridents near end which terminate in 7 small pellets. Prominent collar. Length 11.2cm. Found with wood in socket, taken to Cambridge University Museum for identification, result unknown. Found caught in seed drill by 'Dick' Clements who discarded it. Refound by (Horace) O V Greenacre in June 1953 approximately. According to Mr Clements "found on or near stony patch" in ploughed field (S1, S5).

Although precise findspot recorded (S2, S3) in view of circumstances of discovery findspot must remain approximate.

The complex rib pellet arrangement, back to front socket, and heavy mouth moulding suggest a date of, at earliest C7 BC (S1, S4).
