Full Description
1946: Roman building debris and wall footings found on Castle Hill meadow - site East of school, South of Chesterfield Drive. Excavated by Basil Brown from June till September 1946, the site was on the North West edge of a large gravel pit, filled in after September. However wall debris was found on the South West edge of the pit and pottery sherds on the South East edge, so it is likely that the site had extended across the pit originally. Socket holes for pillars or posts were also found amongst the wall footings and much building debris, including broken roof tiles, was encountered. Finds included a bronze fibula, bronze nail, a late 4the Century coin and pottery sherds (S1-S6).
1998: Trial pits in 1998/9 for a replacement to part of Scout hut have defined the location of the gravel pit without exposing any Roman material, (S7).
