Full Description

An area adjacent to a disused pit stripped of topsoil for further sand and gravel extraction revealed features of Rom and Sax date which were excavated. The main Rom material was a group of 12 cremations, 3 of which were in pots, one with two other accompanying vessels including a colour-coated beaker. There were also scattered pottery sherds and two coins and late pottery sherds (Oxford ware) in the ESax sunken featured building (S1). During extraction after the excavation a small complete narrow mouthed jar with female face mask (as later Rom flagon types) was found which may relate either to undiscovered late Rom activity (eg inhumation burial?) or have been re-used in a Sax context (S2).
The site lies on a hill top overlooking the main large settlement area (HCH 001) to the E.
There is also a glass vessel fragment said to be from "Gallows Hill Easton" in Ipswich Museum which probably derives from this area as there is not a Gallows Hill in Easton (Easton Misc 03213)(S3)(S4).
