Monument record SOL 016 - Cropmark of trapezoidal enclosure of possible Iron Age or Roman date

Single ditch trapezoidal enclosure shown as cropmark on AP. Circa 80m x 60m, no entrance visible (S1).

The cropmark of trapezoidal or sub-rectangular enclosure, possibly representing a farmstead or settlement Iron Age or Roman date, is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3) to the south of a large area of co-axial fields and trackways (SOL 010). The enclosure is centred on TM 5033 9765 and measures 86m by 66m. It seems likely that this enclosure relates to a small farmstead or similar settlement site. An Iron Age or Roman date for this site would seem to be most likely, however an earlier (later prehistoric/Bronze Age) date is also feasible given the increasing evidence for pre-Iron Age enclosed settlements in East Anglia. Other than some Neolithic finds recorded within the vicinity (SOL 019, BLN 015), there is no associated dating evidence. The relationship between the enclosure and the wider area of fields and tracks is not immediately clear, as it is set back from the main site, however the enclosure does share alignment with some of the nearby boundaries to the west of Poplar Farm, suggesting some contemporaneity. However the overall coaxial field and trackway system is likely to represent several phases.
