Monument record SOL 010 - Cropmarks of large coaxial field system

Please read our .

Summary

The cropmarks of large coaxial field system of unknown date, but probably later prehistoric and/or Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs. Other nearby areas of fields, for example SOL 002 and LUD 017, would appear to be a continuation of – or at least the same broad phase as - this coherent coaxial system at Park Farm. This field system and others in the area have broadly been interpreted as being of later prehistoric and/or Roman date. It is possible that Green Lane, which follows the same alignment as the tracks in places, could represent a fossilised part of this ancient landscape.

Full Description

Field system and trackway complex. Contains at least two ring ditches (SOL 008)(SOL 009).

January 2014. Lothingland, Lowestoft and North Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Mapping Programme.
The cropmarks of large coaxial field system of unknown date, but probably later prehistoric and/or Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs (S3-S14). The site is centred on TM 5055 9848. Other nearby areas of fields, for example SOL 002 and LUD 017, would appear to be a continuation of – or at least the same broad phase as - this coherent coaxial system at Park Farm. This field system and others in the area have broadly been interpreted as being of later prehistoric and/or Roman date. THE EHA record (TM 59 NW 29) indicates that Roman pottery and 4th century coins have been found in the area to the north of Park Farm. It is possible that Green Lane, which follows the same alignment as the tracks in places, could represent a fossilised part of this ancient landscape.
The main characteristic of these sites overall is a series of broadly parallel fragmentary trackways and linear boundaries, with a grid pattern of fields (or paddock and/or enclosures) in-between. It is not clear whether the large group of ring ditches (SOL 008) represent earlier round barrows or broadly contemporary domestic or agricultural structures.
It is not possible within the current project scope to attempt to refine the phasing of these complex and multiphase field systems and therefore some fragmentary ditches, not forming part of this system, have been included within the site. Additionally parts of this site have been recorded under LUD 008 due to problems with separating out features that have been incorporated into other areas of enclosures.

March 2023. Assessment of the Character and Significance of East Anglian Field Systems project.
The site described above was included in the dataset analysed for the Historic England-funded Assessment of East Anglian Field Systems project. See the project report (S15) for further details.
