Full Description
June 2014. Lothingland, Lowestoft and North Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Mapping Programme.
The site of possible former low earthworks and vegetation marks of a possible medieval to post medieval enclosure or infilled moated may be visible on aerial photographs at Carlton Manor, formerly Hedley House (S1). A broad L-shaped ditch would appear to adjoin the extant post medieval boundaries and hedge lines in (S1). The width of the ditches, up to 6m, and the appearance of the vegetation marks, could suggest a small moated site – of a similar size and shape to the nearby CAC 005 - although this is not certain and it may just relate to a medieval to post medieval boundary feature or enclosure. Howeve, whilst part of the feature can be discerned in the earlier photograph (S2), it is not as clear and this may suggest that the appearance in 1951 could relate to more recent activity at the site.
