Full Description
June 2014. Lothingland, Lowestoft and North Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Mapping Programme.
A fragmentary, rectilinear arrangement of ditches, perhaps representing field or enclosure boundaries, is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S2). A scatter of Roman pottery and coins has been found nearby (SHER GSE 012), and the cropmarks could be related to this; they could instead relate to the Neolithic to Bronze Age flint scatter also found here (SHER GSE 016) although given their appearance this seems less likely. The ditches are oriented at an angle to the modern field pattern, suggesting they pre-date it. Like other cropmarks in this area, however, their archaeological significance is uncertain (see SHER GSE 076), and they could instead reflect the underlying geology, which itself appears to form a rectilinear pattern.
