Full Description
A World War II Coastal Artillery Battery, is visible in 1941 around TM 520803, at Easton Wood. The camoflaged gun positions are visible at TM 52168026 in June, as is some of the barbed wire (S1). The Battery Observation Post is visible at TM 52128023 in November as are the two searchlight emplacements (at TM 52338042 and TM 52168011 (camoflaged)) and more of the wire (S2). The hutted camp is visible in January 1943 (S3), actually in Easton Wood (so was probably in place in 1941 but obscured by the trees).
The battery may have replaced that at Covehithe, just to the north, or may have been occupied by the same unit.
Most of the Battery features have since been eroded away, although there may still be remains of the camp within Easton Wood.
Initially numbered as COV 029 during pilot survey of intertial area. Re-numbered Nov 2004 (S4,S5)
Location of a coast defence battery consisting of two 6 inch guns (S6,S7).
