Full Description

An irregular line of anti-tank cubes, c 350m long, can be seen as a structure on grassland and the beach to the west of Walberswick on an aerial photograph from 1940 (S1). The anti-tank cubes can also be seen on later photographs, from 1945 (S2), by which time there appears to be a system of trenches with adjacent banks associated with the anti-tank cubes. There also seem to be two structures placed among the anti-tank cubes, at TM50017448 and TM50037452, which would presumably have served a military function. These features together would have formed part of the World War II defences in this area.

SE of bridge leading to car park and beach, S of Walberswick Anti-tank cubes. Approx. 15 cubes in a row that curves to the W at N end. At N end the cubes seem to have been moved out of line. Each cube has marks of vertical shuttering on sides (S3).

SE of bridge leading to car park and beach, S of Walberswick Anti-tank cubes. 6 cubes in a row, laid out side to side (S4).

Near beach, S of Walberswick, in front of beach huts. Anti-tank cubes. A long row of 4ft square cubes stretching from car park to beach huts. W end of row goes up seawall onto edge of beach . A few of the cubes are overturned. All are laid out side to side (S5).

2014: A survey of WW2 heritage at risk on the Suffolk coast recorded these anti-tank cubes and an additional line of cubes c.30m to the east, however it is thought this other line are actually the missing blocks from the original line which have been relocated in more recent times to block car acces. This line was not regularly spaced or aligned unlike other examples, further evidence that they have been moved from their original location (S6).
