Full Description
Oyster pits, centred on TM31054040 in the Deben Estuary near Ramsholt, can clearly be seen on aerial photographs taken from the 1940s onwards. The site consists of a number of rectangular pits cut into the salt-marsh, connected by narrow channels. (S1) (S2) The oyster beds are described as disused on the OS 25" 2nd Ed. map of circa 1904. They are not depicted on the 1st Edition of c.1884, suggesting that they may date to the very end of the Post Medieval period. (S3) Recent photography clearly shows that the features are beginning to silt up. (S4)
