Full Description

An enclosure and land boundary probably of Post-Medieval date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs, centred on circa TM47296323. The boundary is visible as a low bank roughly 10-20m in width, that encloses 2 areas and forms the edge of a third. The largest enclosed area is roughly square, 8.5 hectares in area. From the north-west corner its four corners are located at TM47206352, TM47496353, TM47496324 and TM47206323. The second area bounded by the bank adjoins the southern edge of the larger enclosure. It is sub-rectangular in shape and in total encloses circa 2.25 hectares. It is also divided by an internal bank, splitting it into two areas of roughly 1.25 and 1 hectares. The corners of this area are located at TM47296323, TM47496324, TM47466310 and TM47326311. A final stretch of bank is visible extending from TM47326308 to TM47056306. The banks correspond with land boundaries marked upon the 1st and 2nd edition Ordnance Survey maps of 1884 and 1904, suggesting a Post-Medieval date for the features. These form boundaries to land marked as 'The Warren', located between Warren House and Hill House, but it is unclear whether they form part of the warren or are simply boundaries to it. The banks are visible on aerial photographs up to 1955, but are partially obscured by the managed woodland in the area. However, the area from TM47496324 to TM47206323 southwards appears to have been partially ploughed away in photographs of 1958, when the features appear as a cropmark. The site is destroyed during the construction of Sizewell power station.(S1-S5)
