Full Description

A mineral extraction pit, probably for sand, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs, centred on circa TM47386011. The pit is visible on aerial photographs from 1940 onwards. It is irregularly shaped and covers an area of circa 0.3 hectares, or circa 3000 square metres. A sand pit is marked in this location on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map of 1884, and again on the 1904 2nd edition, although latterly sand is not specified as the product. However, the pit mapped in 1884 and 1904 is only circa 300 square metres in area, suggesting that although the pit does not visibly alter from 1940 onwards, that sand extraction may have continued well into the 20th century. (S1-S4).
