Full Description
A probable sluice structure of possible Post-Medieval or modern date is visible in the inter-tidal zone of the River Alde at circa TM45035545. Two linear post built structures, probably timber, extend into the saltmarsh from the sea wall for approximately 50m. Although not noted in this precise location, sluices are noted on the first and second Ordnance Survey maps of circa 1884 and 1904, approximately 40m to the west at circa TM44995549 (S1, S2). Although the remains of a sluice mouth channel may be visible behind the sea wall, the early sluice channel is not visible on the river side of the sea wall on aerial photographs of 1945. It is possible that the channel and structure visible on the aerial photographs replaced their earlier counterparts sometime after 1904. By 1972 only circa 7m of structure are visible. It is unclear from the photographs whether the rest of the structures have been deliberately removed or destroyed, or have simply succumbed to erosion. ( S3-S5)
