Monument record ADB 161 - Post Medieval shellfish pits and a probable WWII bomb crater.

A group of probably Post Medieval shellfish production pits centred on circa TM46195467, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of Aldeburgh parish from 1940 onwards (S1). The pits vary in size from circa 2 x 4m to circa 6 x 10m, and are located in the saltmarsh between the coast and the River Alde. Although the majority of the pits are not marked on the first and second edition Ordnance Survey maps of circa 1884 and 1904, some larger pits are suggesting that the pits date from the Post Medieval period. The circular feature at circa TM46145467 is probably a bomb crater of World War II date. These features are still visible on aerial photographs of 1972. (S2-6)
