Full Description

A group of possible oyster pits, probably of Post-Medieval date are visible on aerial photographs as earthworks cut into the Saltmarsh below The Cliff, on the eastern bank of the Butley River, centred on circa TM39804894. The features are visible as roughly rectangular pits, inter-connected by thin channels cut into the saltmarsh, varying in size from circa 3 x 5m to about 13 x 8m. Most of the features follow the path of a channel that runs roughly parallel to the sea wall (GED 063). The larger features and channels are marked, albeit somewhat schematically, on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of circa 1904, but although some of the visible features may be of modern date, most probably date to the Post Medieval period.
