Description

Trial trench evaluation was undertaken within the area of a proposed Park and Ride site. The application covers an area of c.7ha but only c.2ha will be directly affected by the development. The remained of the area will be maintained as managed woodland. Sixteen linear trenches were machine excavated to the depth of the natural subsoil. The topsoil was removed until the undisturbed natural subsoil was reached at depths 0.3m-0.7m. The topsoil was thin c0.2m and overlay a subsoil of mid brown sand which varied in thickness from 0.1m-0.5m. Generally, it was thinner on the higher, southern half of the site and thickened to the north and west. The natural subsoil consisted of relatively clean yellow sand and gravel (S1).
