Description

Prior to housing development an archaeological survey was commissioned by the Ministry of Defence Land Agent. The survey area covered approx. 9ha on land south of the old Roman road which once linked Long Melford with Coddenham. 0.2ha were woodland and 2.5ha under grass, these were inspected visually for earthworks. The remaining area was arable land, Field 1 covering 3.25ha and Field 2 covering 2.75ha. Transect lines followed the tractor tyre tracks, in F1 there were 14m apart, in F2 24m apart. At the time of survey both F1 and F2 were under cultivation with crops sown and just through. This survey formed part of a wider programme of evaluation including trial trenching (S1).
