Description
2020: An archaeological excavation was undertaken following the results of an archaeological evaluation. Wo areas, Area A and B, were excavated with a combined area of 2.5ha. Area A, the larger of the two areas, covered approximately 1.95ha and consisted of a rectangular block running east-west across the northern part of site and a rectangular block running north-south down its western side. A strip measuring approximately six metres wide was left unexcavated in the eastern part of Area A to allow for plant access to the soil bunds at the northern end of the site. Area B covered approximately 0.56ha and consisted of a broadly triangular area positioned in the south-eastern corner of site. During the previous evaluation the topsoil was described as being 0.20-0.50m thick, sealing a subsoil varying from 0.05-0.45m thick. Upon excavation, the described subsoil was found to be present on the sandier geology at the southern and eastern ends of Area A, but was thinner, and in some cases entirely absent overlying the clay geology covering the rest of site. The natural geology as encountered during excavation consisted of mid-yellowish-brown sand in the southern and north-eastern parts of Area A and a mixed diamicton of chalky boulder clay covering the central and north-western parts of Area A and the entirety of Area B.
