Full Description
Site of the old Shadingfield Hall. Hall was red brick building of circa 1540, surrounded by a moat `some remains of which still exist. Within the moat was a wall about 8 feet high pierced with "squints for the discharge of arrows"'(S1). The Hall was the residence of the Cuddon family and was demolished when the new Hall (a large white brick mansion) was built in 1814 (S2). The old hall stood not far from the new mansion of the Scott family and an old water colour, reproduced in an engraving, shows a brick building - main range, double storeyed, with pedimented windows and a 3-storey porch slightly off centre; to the left is a slightly recessed and lower range with a square chimney stack. The porch had round corner buttresses rising to projecting finials and a triangular gable. At either end of the building there were cross wings, 3 storeyed, with crow-stepped gables, round-corner buttresses and finials. On the wings and the main range are circular Early Tudor decorated stacks with star tops. A garden wall is shown surrounding the front garden (S3).
A variant drawing is apparently shown in (S4) and discussed in (S5). All that appears to survive is one arm of the moat (shown with a central footbridge on the old 1:10560 map). Presumably the Hall site lay to the south of this.
