Full Description
Domesday vill of Newton now lost to the sea, comprising: Newton Green, said to have been washed away in 1873; Church of St Mary - mentioned in C14 deeds, last mentioned in 1526; circa 1790 remains of church/chapel said to be visible at an area called `The Gate'.
Sub-manor absorbed by Corton in 1515; in 1844 only a stone supported cross known as Newton Cross remained, which was submerged by 1891 (S1)(R1?). Note Med building remains & pottery scatter of lost village (of Corton?) - see COR 010. Location may have been to E of Hopton-on-Sea, Norfolk - note boundary change 1974.
Mentioned in Derby's Domesday Geography of England.
"Betweem Gorleston and Corton there apparentlt excisted the village of Newton. This has disappeared owing to the ravages of the sea." (Steers JA, @The Suffolk Shore: Yarmouth to Aldeburgh', Proc Suffolk Inst of Archaeol and Nat Hist, XIX, Part 1, 1925, 4).
