Full Description
Jan/Feb 1995: Metal detected hilt and part blade of rapier fragment, 146 mm long. From drawing blade is of stepped bladed form. The worn/ damaged(?) hilt plate is of trapezoidal form with two side notches (these may be the remains of two damaged rivet holes from a butt of less angular trapezoid form) and is decorated with crudely incised cross hatched band with hatched pendant triangles pointing towards tip. Also a concave hilt line (S1)(S4). Said to be Irish decorative motif (cf `dirk' from Undley)(S2). Probably early in the rapier series although the narrow blade form (& side notches) may suggest a slightly later date.
Also said to be `light scatter' of Roman metalwork from same area. NGR marked on map by second (un-named) person at (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s)(S1), however marked by finder (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s)(S3) which has been taken to be a more accurate findspot (S1).
