Full Description
Church & churchyard of St Petronilla, Whepstead. Consists of chancel, nave, S porch, W tower. Circa 1066: Imposts of chancel arch with nook-shafts. 1086: A church plus 30 acres of free land is listed in Whepstead in the Domesday survey.
Circa 1300: Nave and chancel. W tower fragmentary.
1658: Spire blew down. Only church in England with this dedication. (Note Church of St Petronilla, Bixley - RMA Misc msf4118; also St Petronilla's Hospital in Bury - BSE 023)(S1). However probably originally had another dedication?
