Full Description

Poplar Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed Os map. The farmstead is laid out in a regular U-plan with additional detached elements. The farmhouse is detached and set away from the yard. The farmstead sits alongside a public road in an isolated location. There has been a partial loss of working buildings with the remaining converted for residential use.

Unlisted 3 bay barn of 18th C date, consisting of largely re-used timbers. It retains much of its original clasped-purlin roof structure and several panels of wattle and daub. It has a narrow porch with an unusually wide and low door added to the rear elevation in the later 18th C, along with 2 lean-to sheds. A separate clay lump shed was added in the 19th C. The barn is of considerable historic interest, but is not of sufficient date to merit listing (S1).

2008: Archaeological monitoring carried out on the property revealed a 16th to 17th century brick and a 19th century brick footing across the barn (S2).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
