Full Description

An unnamed farmstead is visible on the 1st Ed Os map. The farmstead is laid out in a regular E-plan with additional detached elements. The farmhouse is detached and set on the opposite side of the track. The farmstead sits alongside a public road in a loose farmstead cluster. Only two working buildings remain with all other working buildings and the farmhouse lost.

The barn consists of three bays, with a later brick lean-to addition to the rear. The barn was built between 1800 and 1820, before the agricultural depression. The 3 bays are of unequal length. The roof structure is made up of studded butt-purlins and is now pantiled, but likely was originally thatched. The rear lean-to dates to the 19th C.

A collection of 20th C buildings include animal buildings and sheds and an annex. The complex has seen much alteration in the 20th C, and no longer form a cohesive group. The complex has be redundant for many years, but represents the changes in agriculture shaped by national politics from the beginning of the 19th C when this land was enclose by act of parliament.

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
