Full Description

A historic assessment was carried out for a 18th C barn in the grounds of Rookery Farmhouse, a 16th C timber-framed farmhouse, prior to its conversion. The 5 bay timber-framed and weatherboarded threshing barn which sits on a brick plinth has a number of 19th and 20th C alterations, and whilst some areas are in need of repair, others remain in good condition.

There is also a 19th C timber-framed cartshed, and there was also once a 19th C clay lump stable and a cartshed but these have since been demolished. A number of 20th C structures also stand at this site, making it a good example of a developing farmstead (S1).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
