Full Description

Chilton Lodge Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed Os map. The farmstead is laid out in a regular courtyard U-plan with additional detached elements. The farmhouse is detached and set away from the yard. The farmstead sits alongside a public road in an isolated location. There has been a partial loss of working buildings with modern residential extensions and all working buildings in residential use. (S1-4)

The farm buildings form a large complex to the west of Chilton Lodge Farmhouse. The complex evloved over a number of years during the mid and late 19th century and illustrates the growing sophistication of local agriculture during that period. Only the barn and a stable were shown on the tithe map, along with a yard wall which was later incorporated into a cartlodge and commemorates a complete refurbishment of the site. Both of these buildings contain timbers salvaged frome earlier buildings at the site. The timber-framed and weatherboarded and brick and flint threshing barn. has 8 bays and also contains a grain elevator tower. A number of later extensions have been added to this building over time. A new stable was buillt in the late 19th C along with several shelter sheds and a timber-framed, brick and flint cartlodge of 4 bays with a granary above. (S5 & S6 & S7).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
