Full Description

2012: Trenched evaluation revealed that the Martello Tower was surrounded by a ditch, approximately 7m wide and 1 deep. In other trenches within the evaluation area a large ditch and a partially buried structure formed from tin boxes, both of which are probably part of a WWII coastal defence network, were recorded. Wall bases and footings of a demolished 19th century convalescence home were also revealed (S1).

2013: Monitoring of a service trench for a cable duct revealed a hard surface at a depth of 0.6m below the present ground level. It was constructed of a pale mortar, almost chalky, with small brick fragments, pebbles, some large and was c.3m in width and 7cm to 10cm thick. Interpreted as a floor related to a previously unknown structure. Cut by a large concrete block, dating to c. 1900, to which a radio mast was anchored (S2).

2013: Excavation to trace route of probable WW2 defensive ditch identified in previous evaluation revealed it to be straight and over 116m in length. Butt ends to the north-east, runs beyond limit of excavation to the south west. Also EH Level 2 recording of concrete pads and blocks in vicinity of Martello Tower P undertaken - majority of these have been interpreted as anchor points for guide wires and stays associated with a radio mast that was mounted on the roof of the tower in the early 20th century (S3).
