Full Description
Site of a Second World War heavy anti aircraft (Diver) battery in the Diver Strip south of Church Farm Wood. It was armed with four 3.7-inch Mark IIc guns equipped with Predictor BTL, and Radar AA No.3 Mark V when it was deployed here on 10th October 1944, and was manned by 438 Battery of 138 Anti Aircraft Artillery Regiment. It formed part of 5 Heavy Anti Aircraft Brigade deployment (S1).
March 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme.
At least two areas of structures related to the heavy anti-aircraft (Diver) battery described above are visible on aerial photographs (S2-S5), both to the south and to the north of Aldringham Road. A significant area of huts and possible control centre buildings are visible in the southern area, centred on TM 4568 6032, and may contain at least two underground air raid shelters. To the north, further possible accommodation huts are visible within Little Beauties Wood, along with three possible road blocks. It was not possible to identify the diagnostic Diver battery gun emplacements on the available aerial photographs, but it is likely that these had already been removed from the site. A further area of World War Two structures, which may be related to the Diver site, is visible to the north east and has been recorded separately (SHER ARG 075).
