Full Description

Pre 1897: Hand axe and two cleavers found in Maynewater Lane. '3 implements and a flake' (Evans 1897) were also found here and were said to have been found '14 feet deep in loamy sub-angular gravel, underlying a deposit of fine grey loam 6 feet thick', which contained fish scales and abundant Anodonta and Bithynia. Andrews (1930) refers to various bones, including those of deer, aurochs and other animals, in the gravel.

Wymer (S1) suggests that are that they are from the same site as the implements described by Evans, as King's Brewery (also known as St Edmunds Brewery) is at the head of Maynewater Lane.

Overall these finding suggest significant, in situ, Lower Paleolithic (Acheulean?) deposits are likely to exist in this area.

Precise location of the deep intervention needs checking (with Green King?).
