Full Description

Late Prehistoric pit containing two worked flints, dated Late Neolithic-Early Bronze Age was identified. The pit contained a low concentration of fine charcoal. Two ditches were also identified on a northwest-southeast orientation and is possibly of Post Medieval date. It measured 1.90m wide and 1.05m deep (S1).

Finds and features realting to the Neolithic, Iron Age and Post Medieval periods. The earliest human presence was represented by a small quantity of Early to Late Neolithic surface recovered worked flint as well as from later features. A cluster of nine pits was identified and dated to the second half of the Early Iron Age and may represent settlement margins. Twenty-five additional pits and postholes could not be assigned by period, although a number of these may also be prehistoric. The Post Medeival period was represented by a ditched rectilinear enclosure that corresponds with a known nineteenth century oak plantation; this may have been established in response to soil reduction resultant from long-term intensive rabbit burrowing evinced across the site. Wartime activities were illustrated by two large pits that contained clearance debris including fragments of mortar rounds (S2).
