Full Description

Evaluation revealed activity on site dating to the prehistoric, Anglo-Saxon and medieval periods. Prehistoric activity comprised a trackway defined by parallel flanking ditches and a series of further ditches defining parcels of land to the east of the trackway. Small pits containing pottery and worked flint suggested the presence of settlement activity nearby. Three sunken-featured buildings (SFBs) were identified, along with a large number of post-holes that may have been the remains of post-built structures. The Anglo-Saxon activity appeared to be focussed in the north-western corner of the site on either side of a palaeochannel, still visible as a depression in the landscape. A series of rectilinear enclosures dating to the medieval period on the northern and eastern boundaries of the site may have been domestic plots fronting onto Valley Road and Lovers Lane respectively, although no structural remains were identified (S1).
