Full Description

Woodside Farm (Wilkinson Farm), Fressingfield. 16th century farmstead and farmhouse. Loose courtyard two-sided plan formed by working agricultural buildings. The farmhouse is set away from the yard. Partial loss (less than 50%) of the traditional farm buildings. Located within a hamlet (S1-6).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.

Woodside Farm under various names, has clear documented references back to the 16th Century and exhibits many of the agricultural practices and characteristics of agricultural development through to the mid 20th Century. Woodside Farm displays a typical East Anglian farmstead and has an array of buildings which displays the changing nature of farming over approximately 400+ years.

The main farmhouse is a grade II late 16th/early 17th century building. This formed the western end of the loosely linked farmstead. Behind this on the north lies a 1½ storey clay lump building built between 1820-1870 with an integral first floor and single storey outshut on the west side. The building has the characteristics of former stables with hayloft over. To the due east of the farmhouse lies the range of buildings forming the traditional farmyard pattern. This includes 20th century cattle stalls, a 19th century cart shed, and a late 16th/early 17th century threshing barn (S7).
