Full Description
Two Neolithic pits and four pits, along with a droveway and eight short stretches of ditch/gully dating to the Bronze Age period were identified. These Bronze Age remains appear to have formed part of a ditched-field system, significant as few have been recorded in Suffolk. A small quantity of Neolithic and Bronze Age (mostly Late Bronze Age) pottery was found on the site (199sherds/2.469kg) material.
Evidence for earlier prehistoric activity on site was limited, although 30 sherds of Late Neolithic pottery were recovered from eight features across the site and flint arrowheads, microdenticulates, burins, scrapers, blades and a flaked axe/adze dating to the Neolithic were also recovered. The majority of this material is considered to be residual, found within later features, although two features (pit 80226 and treethrow pit 30802) are considered to be Neolithic in date.
Evidence for Bronze Age activity included two north-east/south-west-orientated ditches forming a droveway, eight short stretches of ditch/gully, and four pits. In addition, residual assemblages of Bronze Age pottery were recovered from c. 70 features, which when spatially assessed, provides a clear focus of Bronze Age activity in the south-eastern corner of the site.
