Full Description

Whitton Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed Os map. The farmstead is laid out in a multi-yard pattern with regular E-plan with additional detached elements. The farmhouse is attached to the agricultural range. The farmstead sits alongside a public road in a village location. There has been a significant loss of working buildings with the remaining converted for residential use.

2-storey red brick house (brick-encased in the 19th century) dating from the mid/late 16th century and extensively altered throughout the 17th-19th century (S1). The oldest section consists of 2 bays on the SW side, with roll-moulded main beams to the ceiling and a plain crown-post roof - Type of 2-bay range added frequently to medieval houses with open halls during the 16th century (S1). The building would have likely had an earlier structure and would not have stood alone (S1). The kitchen maintains its original fittings (S1). The rear of the house is believed to be older (S2).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
