Full Description

Manor Farm, Stradbroke. 16th century farmstead and farmhouse with converted buildings. Regular courtyard U-shaped plan formed by working agricultural buildings. The farmhouse is set away from the yard. Partial loss (less than 50%) of the traditional farm buildings. Located within an isolated position (S2-7).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.

Manor Farmhouse is a grade II-listed timber-framed and rendered building in open countryside on the eastern edge of Stradbroke parish, approximately 750 metres south of Pixey Green. The house has been unsympathetically renovated in recent years (by a previous owner) but remains an excellent example of a late-16th century farmhouse with a particularly fine queen-post roof. It reflected the standard internal layout of its period, with a central hall and cross-passage flanked on the north by a pair of service rooms and on the south by an axial chimney and parlour. The arrangement of the upper storey was unusually sophisticated,
possessing a ceiling of chamfered joists throughout. The attic chamber was lit by a narrow window in the parlour gable and an exceptionally wide window in the service gable which retains several original diamond mullions (S8) .
