Full Description
The site consists of a grade II-listed timber-framed and rendered late-16th century farmhouse parallel to the road on the south and a barn of the same period at right-angles to the north with a number of attached single-storied sheds. The house retains a rare queen-post roof but that of the barn, which was replaced with a shallow-pitched corrugated-iron structure in the 20th century, contained side purlins in conjunction with a 16th century-type scarf joint. The two buildings are both well framed but modest structures with the two-cell house lacking a parlour and the three-bay barn extending to only 10.4 m in length by 6.1 in width (34 ft by 20). The barn is now larger as it has been combined with an 18th or 19th century stable that formerly adjoined its eastern gable. Much of its timber frame has been lost, including the roof and both gables, but all four of its tie-beam arch-braces survive along with rare evidence of its original small rear door (normally destroyed elsewhere when vehicle thoroughfares were inserted in the 19th century). Small barns of this kind are much less common than their larger counterparts, having been more prone to reconstruction and alteration over the years, and the survival of a contemporary farmhouse alongside is rare. The site layout here is abnormal, with the barn placed at right-angles beyond the service end of the house as usual but facing north away from the house instead of towards it. A former cart lodge against the barn’s western gable was added in the mid-19th century but has been converted beyond recognition in recent years, while the contemporary clay-lump cattle sheds to the east have been extensively altered (S1).
Greenlands Farm, Denham. 16th century farmstead and 16th century manor farmhouse. Regular courtyard U-shaped plan formed by working agricultural buildings. The farmhouse is set away from the yard. Partial loss (less than 50%) of the traditional farm buildings. Located within a loose farmstead cluster (S2-7).
Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
